With Vande Bharat sleeper, Indian Railways eyes trains better than Rajdhani Express; 20 features

Indian Railways is looking to change the face of travel in the coming years with the introduction of new Vande Bharat trains that will be "far superior" to Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains. In her Budget this year, FM Sitharn had announced the plan for rollout of 400 Vande Bharat trains over the next 3 years. Railways recently floated the tender for 200 sleeper type Vande Bharat trains, even as it works to introduce over 100 chair car versions.

The new Vande Bharat sleeper trains are expected to be a big upgrade from the premium Rajdhani Express service. Indian Railways has said that the new trains will have passenger amenities comparable to that of "best-in-class" trains globally in terms of comfort, functionality and aesthetics. It has asked the bidders to study the esting LHB sleeper coaches and ensure that the passenger amenities and facilities are "far superior".

The fully air-conditioned trains will be designed for a life of 35 years to be used for long and medium distance services. According to the tender documents, the sleeper trains would be made of stainless steel or aluminum, with the latter being a first for railways. Similar to the esting Vande Bharat trains, these will have driving cabs at both ends, allowing them to run in either direction without a locomotive.

The 16 car train sets will have 11 AC 3-tier coaches, 20 car trains will have 15 and 24 car trains will have 19 coaches. All three configurations will have 4 AC 2-tier coaches and 1 First Class AC coach.

Design of train coaches especially the toilets, wash basins, attendant berths, middle berths etc. needs a major overhaul. There are lot of model examples to learn from, for example from the toilets of commercial planes, which are compact but allow seamless entry and et along with a decently hygienic experience.

Ensure water in the toilets and hand wash throughout the travel. As on date this is not happening. Quality/Taste of food should definitely improve. Even in shathapthi while we were travelling from Chennai to Bengaluru, the food was so so....

Should be rolled out as early as possible with simultaneous passenger awareness who must prect them as their own property not as a 'sarkari' one fit for destruction.

Sophistication is not comfort. Give us adequate space and leg room to sit or sleep. That's enough. Give crowds of non reserve passengers a chance to sit decently. Give us simple clean toilets. Let hawkers serve us ch snacks for the huge number of passengers.=

In India we are capable of starting world class facilities. But we lack maintenance. Over a period of time, it becomes dirty and most of the fixtures broken or dged.,We have to evolve a sy em to maintain the facilities and replace dged ones.

In my view, for maintenance, upgrading, infrastructure development etc.etc.,Railways should increase the fare by 5p /km for 2nd class and 10 - 15 p /km for A/C travelers.

Don't introduce new set of modern trains. Improve first the esting trains as is done in Mumbai - Chennai route in the area of converting diesel to ric engine, increasing minimum average speed 70km/hr, doubling of railway line, neat and tidy toilets, decent canteen services. Apart from that what else common public wants from the railway?

Only two toilets per coach? It will be nightmarish in long distance journeys. All talk about passenger comfort will mean nothing and even cruel if even esting "comforts" are taken away.

Train tracks must be upgraded to handle better speeds. Also the trains must be maintained. Huge fines must be imposed on people found dging or misusing Trains or any Railway property.

Railway stations are in poor state. The punctuality of trains are in poor state. Not only that even mentality of Indian travelers is pathetic. The fittings in railway coaches are stolen or broken. Many times I have seen the bed linen being stolen by the travelers from air-conditioned coaches. This also needs to be prevented.
